Panchakarma is the primary detoxification therapy in Ayurveda, as mentioned in Charaka Samhita Sutrasthana 16:17-20. It consists of:
Vamana (Therapeutic Emesis) – Induced vomiting to expel excess Kapha dosha, used for respiratory disorders and allergies (Charaka Samhita Chikitsasthana 1.4).
Virechana (Purgation Therapy) – Induced bowel cleansing to remove excess Pitta, beneficial for liver and skin disorders (Ashtanga Hridaya Sutrasthana 19:17).
Basti (Medicated Enema) – Herbal decoctions and oils are introduced into the rectum to balance Vata (Sushruta Samhita Chikitsasthana 35).
Nasya (Nasal Therapy) – Herbal oils and powders are administered through the nose to clear sinuses and improve cognitive function (Charaka Samhita Sutrasthana 5:56).
Raktamokshana (Bloodletting Therapy) – Blood is drawn using leeches or needles to remove toxins from the bloodstream (Sushruta Samhita Sutrasthana 14).
